§ 01 — The Concept

The Diner Ephemera

"Paper that has been handled. Type set by someone who knew what they were doing. Coastal Texas, 1950s to 70s — before anyone thought to preserve it."

This suite exists because the film exists on 35mm, and 35mm has a material life. It is not a file. It has grain, weight, and history. The printed ephemera of the Texas coast from the mid-century has the same quality: menus, ticket stubs, diner placemats, handbill programmes — objects that were used and survived by accident, not design.

Direction B — The Diner Ephemera — positions the Tidewater screening materials inside that tradition. Not as pastiche, not as nostalgia, but as a direct continuation: this is what an invitation looks like when it takes the event seriously. Fifty-five people will see this film once. The materials should hold that weight.

Every design choice traces back to the physical: cream ground as aged paper, asymmetric layout as handset type, crimson as the single saturated colour that appears in old diner signage and letterpress printing. DM Serif Display italic carries the warmth. Inter Light carries the precision. Nothing is decorative.

Hidden Heart
"There's nothing left to protect out here." — The final line of the film is the final line of the ticket. Guests read it before the screening begins. They will hear it again, in the dark, 94 minutes later, and recognise it. This is the only time the film and the stationery share a moment.

§ 04 — Image Suite

Image Suite

Four images were created for the suite — one per design piece. Each was made specifically for this brief, and no image is reused between pieces. All are finished with a sepia-warm filter at delivery to unify the palette.

Tone
Formal without ceremony. The voice of a filmmaker who takes his audience seriously. Not promotional, not humble. Direct, specific, assured.
Copy Source
The invitation copy is verbatim from the brief and reproduced exactly across all pieces — not edited, not softened. Jed's voice is the voice of the suite.
What We Say
"The first and only." "35mm print." "A conversation with the director." Each phrase is specific, earned, and unrepeatable. Nothing could appear on a different event's suite.
What We Never Say
Anything warm or welcoming in the marketing sense. "Join us." "We hope to see you." "An unforgettable evening." The copy does not try. It states.

§ 06 — Design Constraints

Design Constraints

These constraints are rules, not preferences. Each one exists to protect the material integrity of the suite — its print-era character, its specificity, its weight. None of these elements appear anywhere in the Tidewater suite.

× Gradients other than photo-to-ground edge fades. No decorative colour washes.
× Drop shadows, glows, or any effect that reads as digital rather than printed.
× Pure white (#FFF) or cool grey (#999). The palette is warm throughout — no exceptions.
× Centred layout as the default. Asymmetric and left-aligned is the rule; centred is reserved for single-field announcements only.
× Any serif other than DM Serif Display. The font is not interchangeable with similar serifs.
× Generic film iconography — film reels, clapperboards, popcorn. The suite references printed ephemera, not cinema tropes.
× Bold weight Inter. Weight 300 only — the heaviness of the suite comes from the serif display, not from the body type.
× La Maison de Fêtes platform colours in any client-facing piece.
