Everything the day is made of, laid along one line in the order the water put it down — a single painted sheet you read across rather than take apart.
Three things kept in one box — the house's arch, the December water, and the shell that travelled to it — each cut to its own shape and laid over the next so nothing hides anything.
The choice
The same December water, the same shell, the same two coasts. What changes is whether the evening arrives on one painted sheet or as three cut shapes you take apart.
You want the whole day held on one surface — a painted sheet where the cold water runs into the warm room and everything sits along a single line, in the order the tide left it. Nothing to unstack, nothing to lose; one object, kept whole.
You want the layering you asked for, taken literally — three separately cut cards, an arch from your own loggia, the water enclosed inside the warm, and the shell drawn as a proper specimen plate. A small stack that arrives tied and belongs in a box with letters in it.
| A · The Tide Line | B · The Kept Stack | |
|---|---|---|
| What arrives in the envelope | One sheet, whole. | Three cards of three shapes, stacked and tied. |
| How it is made | Continuous watercolour wash — no drawn line anywhere. | Engraved even-weight line, letterpressed into three separate dies. |
| How information is ordered | Horizontally, along one band that runs off both edges. | Vertically, down a stack — each card answers a different question. |
| Where the colour lives | One graded wash; cold at the top, warm at the foot. | Three flat grounds; the water enclosed by ivory, only the oxblood allowed to bleed. |
| The shell | One mark among five on the tide line, found rather than framed. | A full specimen plate with a card to itself. |
| Type | A plain-spoken sans set warm and tight, over an old-style serif. | Copperplate script opening a line of spaced Bodoni capitals. |
| Risk | A wash is a single gesture — if the paper stock is wrong there is nothing else carrying it. | Three dies cost more and the scalloped lobes must stay above a 3 mm radius or they tear. |
Direction B — The Kept Stack — is the world that was built. Every piece in the suite descends from it; The Tide Line was not carried forward.
